3.0 out of 5 stars Okay for a tiny garden, April 18, 2009
This review is from: Troy-Bilt Bronco 208cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Rear Bolo Tine Tiller (Lawn & Patio)
My husband and I searched everywhere for a small rear tine tiller that I could handle better than the "huge" one we had. After researching and listening to salesmen, we chose this one. (He was very skeptical because he thinks bigger is better.) Anyway, after the garden dried out from the rains, he tried out the new Bronco. He complained to me that he had to push it through the garden. I just thought he was saying that because he wanted a larger one. (Keep in mind, our garden has been worked about 10 years and is now a mixture of lots of clay, and little topsoil, so it is still "thick" and hard.) I finally got to try the tiller out, and on the first pass, through the edge of the garden that had not been tilled as much, it went great. Once I got into the garden that had been worked over the previous years, I had to push the tiller. I also had to lift it up to keep it from getting stuck in the dirt. It would till down, but the tires are not big enough to pull it. Guess where it is now... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!!, March 18, 2009

I am so happy with this purchase. It's my first tiller so I really wasn't sure what to expect. I watch my strong brother-in-law struggle with his front tine tiller every year and thought I would face the same. Even though I've read that rear tine tillers are easier to handle, I thought I would still have a hard time because I'm a 44 year old woman with pitiful upper body strength:)....Well I was wrong....It came assembled. I added gas and it started on the first pull. It plowed through that clay, rocky dirt like it was dry sand. It also cut up the dry weeds and brush (that I neglected to clear last year)and mixed it in the soil as it spit apple size rock out the side.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Tiller but has limited abilities, July 12, 2009

This review is from: Troy-Bilt Bronco 208cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Rear Bolo Tine Tiller (Lawn & Patio)
This is a great tiller for my use which is tilling between garden rows and around trees to eliminate weeds. I have tilled quite a bit of ground getting ready for tree planting.

The 1st thing I noticed is that you can't till at full depth on the first pass with this tiller. The tires don't have enough grip. 2-3" is tops. On the second pass you can get down to full depth. The engine has plenty of power and will work as well at idle speed as full speed - just a little slower. The tilling speed could be faster and combined with the 14" width, tilling a 20x20' piece of ground takes about 15 min.

It seems to be well built and I expect it to last for many years. One thing that could be stronger is the handle. It is very easy to manouver for a tiller, but the handle tends to flex when turning and has even bent a little in one direction or the other.

If you have a big garden and need to do a lot of tilling, I would recommend getting a bigger tiller with... Read more

This was received in the Autumn, early October, so it has not been used much yet. It was open, assembled, started and test ran.

Delivery:
The delivery was listed as Amazon Prime without any further qualification when ordered but it is actually delivered by a freight company who calls to setup a delivery appointment. Someone must be present to accept the delivery but they came with a lift truck and put the unit into our garage on the pallet. When they called they asked if someone would be there to help unload the truck and when I said no (only my wife home) they said they would bring a lift truck which they did without problem. Total time to receive was about 7 days.

Packing, unpacking, assembly:
The unit was on a full size pallet and wrapped with heavy corrugated box. The unit would have been hard to unload from a truck even with 2 people since the pallet is bulky and heavy but once the tiller is unpacked it is easy for 2 people to lift. There are... Read more

I purchased this tiller from Home Depot (apologies to seller), and used it two times last fall for no more than a combined one hour. I went to start it today, roughly 4 1/2 months after the last use, cord snapped immediately. This tiller has been meticulously cared for and stored in a heated garage over winter. Buyer's beware.

Tiller was easy to assemble and get running. After about 30 minutes of use, a horrible screeching noise came from the transmission when in Forward, Forward with till, or Reverse. I've seen this problem mentioned online in other reviews and the official Husqvarna advice is to take it to an authorized servicing dealer for service. Of course, Husqvarna customer service is closed on weekends when most of their residental consumers are using their products. Out of frustration, I shot about 16 oz of grease into the right size zerk fitting, then removed the fitting and put an ounce of oil in there, and then put the zerk fitting back in. Silenced the problem (at least temporarily) and I was able to finish breaking the sod on a new 1500 sq ft garden. The tiller runs nice, but apparently there's some sort of problem with lubing the transmission at the factory and their QA isn't finding it.

If you're tall like me, you'll be wishing that the handle was about 6 inches longer... Read more

This review is from: Husqvarna CRT900 14-Inch Briggs & Stratton 900 Series Gas Powered Counter Rotation Rear Tine Tiller (Lawn & Patio)
I received the Husqvarna CRT900 Tiller yesterday. I just happen to be a retired mechcanic, with small engines, state inspection licence for all types of vehicles. Right out of the box, the tiller had no oil in the engine. I filled the Briggs with oil. Started on the first pull, but that's all it would do. Put tiller in forward, reverse, and it just sat there. Pulled off the side cover, and the belt was never put on the idler pulley. The flat part of the belt, must go over the Idler pulley. Well I fixed that. Started to till, and ran it for about one minute. I noticed the transmission was a little noisy. There is a grease fitting on the transmission housing. Pumped an ounce of grease into the housing, and ran fine from then on. I could understand this, if someone would buy a used piece of equipment, but not a new one. Husqvarna needs some quality control. This is not Amazons fault. Husqvarna packed this, in there own packing material!

I have never used a tiller until getting this one. I think it could plow all day. Nice powerful machine. Easy to start. Runs great and tills nicely. Everything is good except I have a little bit of a hard time handling it. I am tilling a garden area my father gardened maybe 15 years ago...an established garden spot. But it seems like hard work...and the only thing I can contribute that to is the counter rotation of the tines. Like one review regarding that option said...you have to nudge the thing through the job...and that is a little tough. If I had to choose over, I think I'd rather till a spot a couple of extra times going different directions than nudging this tiller along. Maybe once I've used the garden a season or two the tilling will not be this hard. Or, hey, maybe all tilling is a pretty good workout.
